Enclosed is the agenda for the General Meeting at Tower Street on 8th September.

Please come along and have your say on what events we should run next year and which Associations you would like us to affiliate to.

MEMBERS

Club members have not had the best of luck this year with eight of us being transported to hospital after incidents, with the last four happening in the space of 11 days.

After his broken wrist in Majorca and then a crash in April, John Parkes had a heart attack while on our Tuesday run on 15th July, spent a week in hospital and is awaiting further hospital tests.

Two days after John P’s attack and still recovering from his broken elbow Mick Pepper was diagnosed with angina and is about two weeks behind John in awaiting further hospital tests.

Riding home from the Henley 10 on 23rd July, Andy Pearson had a mysterious crash in Holly Lane, between Tuddenham and Rushmere, which smashed his helmet into three pieces. He spent two days in hospital, had three weeks off work and has undergone a variety of tests.

Two days later on 25th July, John Tovell experienced a serious crash while on a training ride on the Levington Road (old A45) sustaining several broken bones and spent 11 days in hospital, which included a visit to Norwich Hospital for plastic surgery.

Best wishes to all our causalities with a hope that they make a rapid and full recovery.

COMMITTEE MEETING 7TH JULY

* Apologies Colin C and Bob
* Colin C is now officially the Club Treasurer.
* Delivery of the new order for Club clothing is awaited.
* Final arrangements for the Open 25 on 13th July were discussed.
* Steps are being taken to get photos of the new club strip on the website.
* Mark has volunteered to organise the 2009 Open 25 on the same course and corresponding date.
* Next meeting – General Meeting 8th September.
* Next Committee Meeting – 6th October.

After the Open 25 and as a result of information from the EDCA Committee, Club committee members decided, that should circumstances dictate, the 2009 Open 25 would start from Wortwell.

CLUB OPEN 25 – 13TH JULY

The event attracted 69 entrants, which included two tandems and was six more than last year. As expected with a weather forecaster as organizer the morning was as good as you get on the course and produced good times all round. Both the men’s and lady’s sections provided good contests, with the men producing the closest possible result with Lee Bark - Stowmarket & DCC 54.07 beating Peter Balls –West Suffolk Wheelers by one second.

Of the seven ladies who entered and started, Laura Robinson – CC Breckland did an excellent 1.3.21 to win the Pat Pepper Memorial Trophy when she beat last year’s winner Emilie Fisher – elmycycles.co.uk. by 34 seconds.

Mick presented Laura with the Trophy after the event together with a bouquet to mark the occasion.

"Thank you" again to Mark for all his hard work in providing such a well organised event. However, it must be said that this would not have been possible without the splendid turnout of members to help on the day. Thanks to everyone who was involved.

LA MARMOTTE CYCLO SPORTIVE – 5TH JULY

Paul Martin and Andy Pearson made a return trip to the event, which starts at Bourg d’Oisans in the French Alps and covers a 184 km (108 mls) circular route that includes 68 kms (42 mls) of climbing. Known as the alpine " Circle of Death" the route which takes riders over the Cols du Glandon, Telegraphe, Galibier and finishes at the top of Alpe d’Huez saw Paul and Andy finish together in 11 hours 45 minutes. Ted Saunderson did not have a good day and decided enough was enough at the top of the Telegraphe.

CTC SUFFOLK AUDAX – 9TH AUGUST

After last year’s good turnout of members, Colin Kindred was our only representative this year in the 124 km (77ml) event starting from Blaxhall V.H.

The anti clockwise circuit via Aldeburgh, Dunwich, Framlingham and Westerfield became wet for the last one and quarter hours and with the rain becoming heavier Colin had an unpleasant ride home to finish his near 120-mile day.

ICA 10 MILE LEAGUE

The series of 18 events finished on 6th August with the Wolsey promoting the last six on the Henley circuit, one of which was cancelled due to rain. Thanks to members who helped in any way in the running of these events.

RACING NEWS

BENTWATERS RACES – 13TH JULY

Three members helped to christen the new closed circuit using the runways of the former Bentwaters airbase near Woodbridge in the programme of events run by the Ipswich Bicycle Club. Riding in the 3rd and 4th Category event Ged Coles, John Parkes and Andy Pearson finished in the main bunch.

There are four FotY updates this month together with three club records and four awards in Open events, but this tally has and will be reduced by John Tovell’s absence.

Update CC Breckland 10 - 25th June – Confirmation that John T got 3rd Vet on Std.

EDCA CHAMPIONSHIP 15 – (B15/1) – 3RD JULY

It was another windy evening but probably the fastest conditions on the A 11 this season with the wind on the left shoulder coming back after a fast trip to the turn. John T carried on where we left off last month and did another good ride. His 35.24 gained him the bronze medal for 3rd Vet on Std in the Championship as well as beating his own Club and Fastest Vet records by 14 secs and his old Vet on Std record by 37 secs. Jim Stow backed up John with 36.44, which earned him 3rd handicap award but the Club team record escaped, as the three other riders on the start sheet were DNS.

NORWICH ABC 10 – (B10/44) – 5TH JULY

It was breezy as usual but this time at Earsham it was the shorter first leg into the wind.

Mark Pearce led the Club group with 25.24 while Ged Coles recorded 26.35. Colin Clarke’s request for a late start because of work commitment was ignored and he was given an early number. Consequently his official time of 1.13.04 included a 41.15 late start penalty making his time on the road 31.49. Making his debut for the season Don Forsbrook recorded 36.27 while it was good to see Olive riding after a two-month break and she recorded 36.40. Tom Walker also rode and did 25.38.

NORWICH ABC 25 – (B25/4) –6TH JULY

It was still breezy on the A11 between Borwick and Larling but the long leg south had the wind on rider’s left shoulder, which helped to produce some excellent times. John T did a very good 1.2.36 which won him 1st Vet on Std award followed by John Coles with 1.3.50 and Jim 1.4.42. Ged improved his Vets plus again with a 1.5.57 ride, which gained him 3rd Vet on Std. Roger Selmes recorded 1.8.17 and Colin C managed another late start, but no comment on this one and his 1.21.14 included a 1.28 penalty.

EASTERN COUNTIES CA 100 – (E2/100) 6TH JULY

Riding the A 11 course featuring two trips north to Red Lodge with the last 30 miles into a rising southwest wind making the last 11 lumpy miles particularly hard, Bob found it was a far from perfect day and his solid ride of 4.27.47 was well earned.

TEAM ECONOMIC ENERGY 10 – (E2/10) – 12TH JULY

A blustery west wind knocked the edge off everyone’s time on the A11 from Six Mile Bottom where Bob had the opportunity to ride Sunday’s 100 out of his legs with 24.27 and John C recorded 26.31.

WOLSEY RC 25 – (B25/24c) - 13TH JULY

The Club’s dispensation to let ladies ride the Club Open event gave Maureen Nichols the chance to knock 14 minutes off her FotY line with 1.18.14 which was fastest since her comeback and gained her a VTTA standard at the distance. Tom Walker also was very pleased with his 1.5.09.

EAST DISTRICT CA CHAMPIONSHIP 25 – (B25/6) – 20TH JULY

A very blustery morning on the two-lap course using the Wisbech bypass brought no reward for the two Club riders. However, Bob recorded a creditable 1.3.32 while Mark followed with 1.9.58.

SHAFTESBURY CC 50 – (E2/50b) – 26TH JULY

A very sultry 28-degree afternoon with a light wind produced good conditions on the A11/A14 course, which saw the eleven-year-old competition record broken. Bob repeated the feat by breaking his 1997 PB by about a minute when, after reaching the halfway mark in 58.14, he recorded 2.1.14 which is a new FotY.

DISS & DCC 25 – (B25/17) – 27TH JULY

With the nights now as warm as daytime temperatures a month ago it was a warm start on the sporting Diss to Thetford road with a harder return trip to Bressingham. Barry Lee was the Club’s fastest recording 1.10.23 followed by Roger 1.12.19 and Olive 1.41.30. 2nd claim members Tom and Ted did 1.5.57 and 1.11.10 respectively.

TEAM CAMBRIDGE 10 – (E2/10/) – 2ND AUGUST

Abandoned – rain

EASTERN COUNTIES CA 10 – (E2/10) – 9TH AUGUST ????????

ANGLIA VELO 10 - (B10/2) – 10TH AUGUST

A very strong southwest wind made it a hard ride to the finish on the A11 at Besthorpe but thankfully it kept dry. Bob was the fastest of the eight Club names on the start sheet with 24.56 and was backed by Mark 25.51, Ged 28.00, Roger 28.25 and Colin C 29.23. Ted also rode and did 27.37
