Club Open 25

The Club open 25 is on 13th July and please don’t forget that Mark on behalf of the catering staff would welcome any donations of refreshments for riders after the event.

EDCA Marshalling

Don and Olive kindly volunteered to do the Club’s marshalling commitment at the ‘100’on 22nd June and when the half time replacements did not turn up from the other designated club, Johns C & T stepped in to relieve Don and Olive from what would have been a six hour stint. Thanks to all of you.

The "Orchid" Cyclo Sportive – 8th June

This was one of six events that involved Club members on this weekend and this one included John Parkes and Roger Selmes who joined approximately 500 others at Billericay to ride a choice of two events.

In initially dull, cool conditions that developed into a glorious day our duo chose the 105-mile event, which covered an anti-clockwise loop north and northwest through Essex via Braintree, Saffron Walden and Stansted and were among the 152 riders who completed the course.

RACING NEWS

Probably the busiest month of the racing season with members competing in 14 time trials as well as circuit events and a sportive. Eight and possibly nine awards were achieved in open events while, six new FotY lines were written.

EDCA CHAMPIONSHIP 10 – (B10/3) – 1ST JUNE

A dull, cool morning with a light N.E wind making it harder on the longer outward trip was the complete opposite to the previous Wednesday but produced some fast times. John Tovell was in the prize list with his 24.04 gaining him the bronze medal for 3rd Vet on Std, while John Coles was closer to him with 24.39. Ged Coles gained his Vet Std by reducing his best time this year to 25.33 while Ted Saunderson rode and did 25.15.

GODRIC CC 10 – (B10/43) – 7TH JUNE

In the first of five time trials to involve members this weekend a delay of 30 minutes to the start time did nothing to improve the conditions on a day of continuous rain on the Waveney valley course from Wortwell which used new start and finish positions for the first time. Ken and Maureen Nichols were the only Club starters and both did their fastest rides of the year and achieved their VTTA standards. Ken recorded 29.17 and Maureen improved her FotY line by 40 secs to 31.09.

ECCA CHAMPIONSHIP 10 – (E2/10) – 7TH JUNE

50 miles inland made all the difference to conditions where dry roads and a light north wind made for fast times on the A11 from Six Mile Bottom. Jim Stow produced 24.44 while Ged Coles recorded his fastest ride since his comeback and improved on his VTTA standard plus with 25.09.

GODRIC CC 25 – (B25/24C) – 8TH JUNE

A dull dry morning with a light crosswind gave a "hard all the way" ride between Earsham and Harleston. Bob Quarton recorded 1.2.54, while John T secured 2nd Vet on Std award with 1.4.54, followed by Mark Pearce 1.8.24 and Colin Clarke who was seconds away from his three year best with 1.16.08. Ted also rode and recorded 1.9.31.

ECCA CHAMPIONSHIP 25 – (E2/25) – 8TH JUNE

It was also dull and dry on the A14 at Newmarket with the same light wind nagging against riders from the turn at Four Went Ways. John C missed the rapid 10 on the same road the day before due to car problems but more than made up for it with a sterling 1.1.57 which was the fastest since his comeback, gained his VTTA standard and is a new FotY by three seconds. Ged was equally pleased with his 1.6.39, which was also his best since his return and gained his VTTA standard medal.

FINSBURY PARK CC 50 – (F1/50) – 8TH JUNE

Andy Pearson went further afield to the A1 on a course which featured two circuits on the main road facing the same nagging north wind. His 2.7.38 was just 31seconds slower than his ride three weeks earlier.

PLOMESGATE CC 30 – (B30/9) – 14TH JUNE

From five events last weekend to one this week probably was the reason there were nine Club names on the start sheet for two laps of the Tunstall circuit which incorporated the EDCA Championship at the distance. Andy led the Club group with 1.19.37 followed by John T 1.21.40, who collected his now almost normal Vet on Std awards with 4th place in the Open event and 2nd in the Championship. Ged recorded 1.25.35, Barry Lee 1.25.52, Roger Selmes 1.27.32, Ken 1.33.42, Colin Clarke 1.37.37 while Maureen’s 1.40.33 was rewarded with 2nd fastest lady award. Ged, Ken and Maureen gained their VTTA standards at the distance. Tom rode and did 1.21.53 while Ted’s 1.25.10 gained him the bronze medal for 3rd Vet on Std in the Championship.

EAST ANGLIAN CC 10 – (B10/3) – 19TH JUNE

A warm but windy evening provided a very hard return on the A11 back to Besthorpe. John T was the Club’s fastest rider with 23.39, which gained him 1st Vet on Std in the 60-69 age group and shaved 3 seconds off John C’s FotY line. John C did 24.33 , Jim 25.40 while Ged was another prizewinner with 2nd Vet on Std in the 70 plus group achieved with 26.33 and Colin C recorded 28.32.

VTTA (East Anglian Group) 10 – (E2/10) – 21ST JUNE

John C produced a very good effort on the A11 from Six Mile Bottom on a very breezy afternoon that provided a hard ride to the turn. His 23.44 was only two seconds slower than his previous FotY on the same course on a much faster day. Also sampling the conditions were Barry 25.56 and Roger 26.16 in his first ride on the course.

EAST DISTRICT CA 100 –(B100/4) – 22ND JUNE

A sunny but horrendously windy day dashed hopes of fast rides on the four-lap course on the A11 between Borwick and Larling. Andy did a good ride in the circumstance with 5.02.02 while Bob had the misfortune to puncture after 4 miles and without a spare he retired. Ted meanwhile recorded 5.18.05 which won him the bronze medal for 3rd Vet on Std in the EDCA Championship.

CC BRECKLAND 10 – (B10/3) –25TH JUNE

The evening wind was in the same direction as the previous Wednesday on this course but this time much stronger, which meant most times being about a minute slower. John T recorded 24.24 for a possible Vet on Std award and John C 25.19.

GT YARMOUTH CC 10 – (B10/44) – 28TH JUNE

John T was the only Club rider on another very windy afternoon, this time at Earsham, his 25.10 gained him his now customary award with 1st Vet on Std.

LEO ROAD CLUB 30 – (E2/30) –28TH JUNE

The wind was also very persistent in Essex where it provided a very hard ride on the A14 and A11 from Newmarket to the Sawston turn and saw Barry record 1.23.08.

GODRIC CC 50 –(B50/17) –29TH JUNE

A bright day with a rising SW wind on the two lap 15 roundabout Waveney valley course which produced a reasonable day but a hard last leg in the event which incorporated the EDCA Championship. Bob laid his recent "bad luck bogey" recording 1.12.54 with Andy, still feeling the effect of last week’s 100 doing 2.16.02 and Roger 2.29.17. Ted also rode and did 2.25.49.
