MEMBERS' NEWS
The CTC 50 in 4 hour Standard Ride on 11th April organised by
Maureen with help from family members atttracted 41 riders on
a bright sunny day but with a biting northeast wind. The clockwise
circuit from Ipswich via Henley and Brandeston provided a headwind
to halfway at Snape before the second half through
Sudbourne and Hollesley to the finish at Woodbridge. Included
in the field were Club members Dick Coe, John Coles, Colin Kindred,
Mick Pepper,Max Scott and John Williamson..
RACING NEWS
With improving weather combined with lighter evenings more Club
minds are turning to racing as the report shows. Also as it is
so early in the season it is good to see that three awards have
been claimed and a Club record has been broken.
WEST SUFFOLK WHEELERS HILLY 21 - (BS31R) - 13TH MARCH
John Parkes was still ploughing a lone furrow for the Club when
he rode the two lap anticlockwise course from Risby. On a fine
afternoon but with a cold wind blowing across the exposed climb
near the end of each lap John recorded 1.8.02.
PLOMESGATE CC 10 - (B10/90) - 27TH MARCH
This appears to be the event that members were waiting for and
although the weather was variable it has been much worse for
the event. Showers with a west wind greeted many riders but others
had a dry ride and a dropping wind. The ride of the day belonged
to John P, who, while many riders were recording times five
to six minutes outside their best, dropped just 2.26. John's
26.25 gained him 3rd Vet on std award with a +4.35, which was
not just the first Wolsey award of the year but was the first
time trial award he had ever won. John Tovell was back-up man
with 29.16, despite being one of several riders balked by traffic,
followed by John Coles 29.43, Roger Selmes 30.56, Ken Nichols
32.36 and Maureen 35.16.
GREAT YARMOUTH CC 10 - (B10/43A) - 2ND APRIL
The Good Friday morning at Wortwell was initially cold, and although
a west wind provided a push back from the Bungay turn there were
many smiling faces at the finish. John P was again top of the
Wolsey tree with a very solid 25.16 but the pack are closing
up behind him with Bob Quarton nearest, recording 25.26. John
T was next with 26.37 which gained him 4th Vet on std followed
by John C 26.42 and Roger 29.32. Ken just missed a 20 mph ride
with 30.08 while Maureen's 32.44 rewarded her with 2nd ladies
handicap award.
HAVERHILL WHEELERS 20 - (BS5R) - 4TH APRIL
Although it was a cool breezy morning with isolated showers on
the Sturmer - Clare - Stradishall circuit, providing a headwind
up the long drag to Highpoint Prison, the course record was broken
several times. A Club duo of John P and Roger recorded 56.55
and 1.3.46 respectively, with John once again in the top six
on vet standard time.
LEA VALLEY CC 25 - (E2/25) - 10TH APRIL
The event on the A14/A12 course from Newmarket caught the best
day of the year so far and it remains to see how it compares
with the rest of the year. John C made good use of the warm afternoon
which provided a tail wind start with the headwind return broken
up by the change of direction, to record 1.2.51. Not to be outdone
Andy Pearson riding a 72 inch fixed in the medium gear section
of the event, although unable to use the tri-bars because of
discomfort from his recently broken shoulder, recorded 1.5.10
to break the Club Medium Gear record of 1.5.25 set by Paul Auton
in 1983.
