WOLSEY RC 25 12TH JULY
Using a new variation of the Waveney valley course for the first
time with it now starting at the Harleston end at Wortwell saw
a much reduced entry from last year with 51 riders compared with
69 and a disappointing three ladies instead of seven in 2008.
Early rain which had cleared well before the start probably persuaded
one third of the field from starting. David Staff riding for
the VTTA was the winner with 56.23 while Emilie Fisher - Elmy
Cycles won the Pat Pepper Memorial Trophy for the second time
with 1.2.52 for which Mick presented Emilie with the trophy after
the event.
Thank you again to Mark for a well organised event and all the
hard work he put in, this his 13th promotion for the Club.
Thanks also to the large turn out of helpers, without whom the
event would not have been possible.
COMMITTEE MEETING - 3rd AUGUST
q Apologies Colin C, Bob, Mark
q Mark reported that the Open 25 had made a small profit, but
the entries were disappointing. It was felt the reduced entry
may have been influenced by the fact that the course had a new
number and its description did not appear in the National Handbook.
John T would liaise with the District to rectify this.
q An email from Fergus Muir thanked the club for including the
TA event.
q Notice of the AGM had been received from ECCA.
q We have received notification from Headway of their Charity
Ride in April 2010 between Bury St Edmunds and Kesgrave.
q Discussion on the change of date for the Open 25 in 2010 due
to the District possibly organizing the National 100 on that
date. Enquiries would be made by John and Mick on other possible
dates to avoid too many clashes within the area.
q Ken N expressed concern about the safety aspect of riders not
using rear lights on ICA evening events.
q There had been good support for the events both from riders
and helpers and the use of the Community Hall afterwards.
q Proposal by John T that the club purchase a new finish flag
and a new watch, to make sure both timekeepers had two. Maureen
and Colin K to follow this up.
q Next meeting Monday 7th September for General Meeting and Date
Fixing
MEMBER'S NEWS
q On Saturday 4th July Colin Kindred and Mick Pepper were among
31 starters for the CC Sudbury 161 km (100mile) "Castles,
Coast and Cornfields" Audax starting from Bildeston. Contrary
to the previous days forecast the day was very warm and cloudless
and with an increasing wind produced a testing ride particularly
the last 25 miles. The event which went N.E via Stonham, Framlingham,
and Snape to the control at Orford, before returning via Wickham
Market to the start, was not without incident for our duo.
On the return Hasketon had been closed by the Police and declared
a crime scene with riders having to find their own detour. Shortly
after this Colin developed severe cramp and with 86 miles covered
at Claydon, the nearest point to his home, he unfortunately called
it a day and DNF.
q Colin Clarke rode one of the uncommon local midweek Audaxes
when he participated in the Comrades CC 102km "Two Halves"
event from Quendon on Thursday 16th July. A dry sunny breezy
day saw the riders loop east to Braintree before returning to
HQ for the hilly second half around the Herts, Cambs border area.
q John Parkes and Mick joined several hundred other riders at
Colchester on 18th July for the annual Bike Events "Essex
Castle Ride" on an extremely windy morning. Of the 25, 50
and 75 mile options on offer John and Mick chose the 75 mile
version which meant a 35 mile ride into the strong west wind
to the furthest point of the course at Finchingfield. The return
journey meandered for a lot of its 40 miles so much of the anticipated
tail wind was lost which resulted in a hard ride on a hilly course..
RACING NEWS
A quieter month this time now that the evening 10s have finished
but results show that three Club records, five new FotY lines
and three awards in time trials were achieved.
LOTUS LEAGUE
John P started his road racing season by riding four of the League
events at Hethel, finishing in the bunch on each occasion.
EAST DISTRICT C.A CHAMPIONSHIP 15 - (B15/1) - 2ND JULY
It seems that Club records are now like buses. After two in a
day last month they now come along in threes. Maureen Nichols
rode her first event at the distance on a warm but quite breezy
evening on the A 11 from Attleborough and achieved the first
20mph ride since her comeback with 43.52. This broke Pat Pepper's
three year old ladies Club and fastest vet records by 4.35 and
also Olive Forsbrook's 2004 ladies Vet on std record by 3.19
with a new plus of 7.17. Jim Stow was the only other Club rider
to complete and recorded 37.42.
SHAFTESBURY CC 25 - (E2/25|) - 4TH JULY
It was a hard first half to the afternoon event for middle markers
on the A14/A11 course from Newmarket with riders taking about
ten minutes longer going out than on the return trip. With times
generally two minutes slower on the course two weeks ago, John
Coles returned 1.2.58, Ged Coles 1.6.30 and Barry Lee 1.8.35.
Bob Quarton didn't have the chance to test himself when he hit
a pothole halfway to the turn which punctured his front tyre
and wrecked his wheel.
NORWICH ABC 25 - (B25/4) - 5TH JULY
Conditions were much better further up the A 11 at Attleborough
next morning particularly after early light rain which made the
first turn treacherous had cleared. Bob's puncture the day before
may have been a blessing for he recorded the first 25 mph ride
by a member this year with 59.46 which is naturally a new FotY.
John C who was off number two was very consistent with 1.2.25
while John Tovell returned 1.3.15 to collect the 4th Vet on Std
award.
EAST LONDON VELO 10 - (E2/10) - 11TH JULY
A warm breezy afternoon on the A11 provided a half headwind to
the turn which was not too bad as riders were given some protection
by the cuttings. This was reflected in the times as John C improved
his FotY line by 14 seconds to 23.57 and brother Ged did a PB
24.55.
WOLSEY RC 25 - (B25/50) - 12TH JULY
Early rain which cleared but left damp roads saw the christening
of a new course along the Waveney valley from Wortwell and about
a third of the field DNS. Because of our ruling to let Club ladies
ride our Open event Maureen was our only competitor and took
the chance to improve her best since her comeback by 1.16 to
1.16 58 which gained her 2nd fastest lady award in the event
and achieved her 4th VTTA standard medal this year.
EAST DISTRICT CA CHAMPIONSHIP 25 - (B25/6) -19TH JULY
The flat course on the edge of the Fens using two laps of the
Wisbech bypass was as usual subject to a rising wind which gave
no favours to the later riders. John C did a creditable 1.4.01
for the day while John T starting almost one lap later recorded
1.5.44 to claim the bronze medal for 3rd Vet on Std.
CAMBRIDGE UNIV CC 25 - (E2/25) - 25TH JULY
An unusual Saturday morning event on the A14/A11 course from
Newmarket provided a cool morning with a half headwind on the
riders' left shoulder to the turn. John C again showing his consistency
produced a 1.3.30 while John P making his debut on the course
knocked a massive 5.58 of his PB with a fine 1.5.31.
DISS & DIST CC 25 - (B25/17) - 26TH JULY
A dry but breezy morning provided a stiff crosswind on the already
sporting Diss-Thetford road giving the impression of a headwind
both ways. Ken Nichols led our team with 1.17.57 backed by Colin
C l.19.24 and Maureen 1.24.58.
SKEGNESS WHEELERS CC 10 -(C10/9) - 26TH JULY
Mark Pearce tried out another course new to him when he rode
an unusual Sunday afternoon event between Gunby and Illceby in
the Lincolnshire Wolds and recorded 25.32 to finish exactly midfield.
TEAM CAMBRIDGE 10 -(E2/10) - 1ST AUGUST
It was a fine afternoon on the A11 from Six Mile Bottom but the
wind seemed to vary in intensity during the event which produced
some very fast times and where John C recorded 24.17.
