MARSHALLING DUTIES
During June the Club discharged the remainder of its commitments
to provide marshals for local Association events. On 6th June
Barry Lee helped with the ECCA 10 on E2 and the next day Ken
Nichols and John Tovell were acting at the National Championship
25 at Attleborough. The 21st saw Ken and Maureen at the ECCA
10 at Colchester while Mick Pepper and John T marshalled at the
EDCA 100 at Attleborough for its duration.
Thanks is due to all those who have helped the Club in this way.
That only leaves the six ICA 10s starting at Henley on 8th July.
Colin K would like to hear from all those able to help at the
ICA events. Please let him know if you are available and for
which weeks.

MEMBER'S NEWS
This heading has been reintroduced with the hope that members
will let me know what they have been doing, apart from racing.
q On an extremely windy but sunny morning on 6th June Mick Pepper
rode the Bike Events 50 mile "Tour de Tendring" starting
on Dovercourt seafront. The course was an anticlockwise circuit
of the Tendring peninsular which other years could have been
covered twice for the 100 which this year was dropped.
q Next morning, 7th June, on a fine but breezy day John Parkes
and Roger Selmes rode another Bike Events promotion, the 100
mile "Norwich 100".Starting in the City centre the
course was a clockwise circuit of north Norfolk via Reepham and
Blakeney to the halfway control at Sheringham. The rain started
here for the trip down the east coast and then inland via Coltishall
by which time our two were drenched but achieved a 17 mph average
for the ride.
q On 14th June Colin Clarke joined about 400 others who were
riding the 100 mile "Orchid" cyclo-sportive from Billericay.
On a fine sunny day the course took an anticlockwise route through
north and north west Essex passing Danbury, Finchingfield , Saffron
Walden and Ongar before returning to the start.
q All Colin Kindred's miles this year were put to good use when
between 6th and 20th June he did the Lands End to John O' Groats
ride organized by Bicycle Adventures. During the ride he accumulated
1083 miles over 15 days about half of which were wet including
two when it rained all day.
q Email from former member Michael Fahy .
Hi to all from almost 30 years ago. I recently saw the Wolsey
website and recognize many names still active in the club. After
University I guess a lot of you lost sight and track of me as
firstly I left the region and then the country. I married a Manchester
lass and visited many track events but after this period, trips
abroad and a young family put paid to my competitive career,
although I still have that faithful old Alan in the garage (
the tubs are now 25 years old so well matured). I moved to Austria
and then Switzerland where I now work. I still cycle when I can
around here but it is hard work, the flat ride has a point 200m
higher than home and I won't mention the hilly rides. If any
of you find yourselves in Geneva on tour or holiday it would
be nice to meet up with people from a very happy time in my past
and those who gave me my undying love of cycling. Fond memories
of CTC rides, roller racing in the winter, midweek 10s and Ipswich
Crits and many more.

RACING NEWS
It has been another busy month for the Club with members riding
fourteen time trials, breaking two Club records, winning six
awards including Maureen's age group record in the National Championship
25 and setting five new FotY. Perhaps commiserations to John
T who lost two Club records in 24 hours.
Belated news.
Godric CC 10. 9th May. The result sheet has revealed that John
T was awarded 3rd Vet on Std in the event.
EASTERN COUNTIES CA CHAMPIONSHIP 10 - (E2/10) - 6TH JUNE
It was very hard work back from the turn to finish at Six Mile
Bottom on the A11, but at least it was warm. John Coles led us
home with 25.20 backed by John Parkes, 8 seconds off his week
old PB with 25.56 and Ged Coles, in his second ride of the season,
26.21.
ECCA CHAMPIONSHIP 25 - (E2/25) - 7TH JUNE
John C made a return trip to the area next morning for the A14/A11
course from Newmarket, where on a damp hard and windy morning
which gave no real help, he recorded a pleasing 1.5.55.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 25 - (B25/4) - 7TH JUNE
Congratulations to Maureen Nichols for winning the 65- 69 age
group in the National event held on the A11 from Attleborough.
Off No.4 Maureen was the first rider to start on a luckily dry
but windy morning and recorded 1.21.40 and is the first Club
member to win a National award since Pat Pepper won a similar
medal in 2003.
PLOMESGATE CC 30 - (B30/9R) - 13TH JUNE
A warm, sunny but breezy afternoon with the usual extra air coming
off the North Sea seems to be the norm for the two lap Tunstall-
Bromeswell- Chillesford course. John Tovell was back to top Club
spot with 1.23.23 which won him 3rd Vet on Std in the event and
the same award in the EDCA Championship which was incorporated
in the event. Following John was Ged 1.27.34, Barry Lee 1.27.37,
Ken Nichols 1.33.59 and Maureen 1.40.23. With times on average
two minutes slower than in the event last year, Maureen was our
only rider to improve on last year's time which gained her a
VTTA standard medal for the distance as also did Ken. Ted Saunderson
also rode and did 1.29.27.
SHAFTESBURY CC 50 - (E2/50C) - 13TH JUNE
The same conditions applied for the two lap A11/A14 course starting
at Six Mile Bottom without the sea breeze, but the event certainly
produced fast times. Bob Quarton improved his FotY line to 2.1.29,
just 15 seconds short of his time in the event last year.
LINCOLNSHIRE RRA 25 -(C25/35) - 14TH JUNE
Having moved from Norfolk to Lincolnshire Mark Pearce has now
had a chance to sample his new local course. On the rolling
road from Donnington to Quarryington Mark returned a pleasing
1.5.53.
EAST ANGLIAN CC 10 - (B10/3) - 18TH JUNE
A warm but windy evening produced a very fast ride to the turn
and a struggle back to Besthorpe, but resulted in some fast times.
John C returned 24.16 followed by John T whose probable disappointment
with a 25.00 was tempered by winning 3rd Vet on Std award in
the 70 plus age group. Ged did 26.18 and Colin C 27.57 both their
fastest of season.
VTTA (East Anglian Group) 25 - (E2/25) - 20TH JUNE
An afternoon that was damp in places on the A14/ A11 from Newmarket
but did not have the troublesome wind of late and although it
was harder going out produced a surprisingly even ride and some
rapid times. Top Club spot went to John C who took 33 seconds
off his PB with a 1.0.44 which gained him his VTTA standard medal.
Ged had the distinction of being the first Club record breaker
of the year when he recorded 1.4.16 which was the fastest since
his comeback and broke John T's 2007 Vet on Std Club record by
22 seconds with a + 20.06.
Barry did a 1.6.31 which was matched exactly by Ted.
MALDON AND D CC 10 - (E21/10) - 20TH JUNE
Colin C continued his search for SPOCO SE points when he rode
the Steeple/Bradwell course on a mild afternoon and recorded
31.02.
EAST DISTRICT CA (DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP) 100)- (B100/4R) - 21ST
JUNE
What seemed near perfect conditions for time trialling graced
the three and a half lap A11 course around Attleborough with
a cloudy quite warm morning and virtually no wind. Bob made
full use of the conditions and his fitness to record 4.9.03,
breaking John T's 25 year old Fastest Vet Club record by 2.05
and improving his own PB by six minutes.
SPALDING CC 25 - (C25/35) - 21ST JUNE
Mark had a second ride on his new local course when in much harder
conditions than last week, which meant facing a strong headwind
to the 13 mile turn, he recorded 1.7.37
ECCA 10 -(E7/10c) - 21st JUNE
Colin C was one of just 17 riders in the event on the rural Little
Bentley/Weeley/Thorpe circuit where he recorded 30.49 on a super,
warm and calm morning.
CC BRECKLAND 10 -(B10/3) - 24TH JUNE
It really was a stiff evening breeze this time on the A11 making
it a hard and chilly push to the turn at Browick. John C led
us home again with 24.34 followed by a gradually improving John
T whose 24.55 won him the fastest 70+ group award. Our ride of
the evening however was John P who knocked 21 second off his
PB with 25.27, while Jim Stow recorded 25.43.
GODRIC CC 50 - (B50/18) - 28TH JUNE
Morning mist delayed the start of the event on the three lap
course on the A 11 from Besthorpe for one hour which then produced
another superb morning for time trialling with almost no wind.
Ken produced a pleasing 2.24.51 which was just five minutes slower
than his best ever set 44 years ago. Maureen, not to be outdone,
recorded 2.39.02 a PB by 7.24, while both achieved a VTTA Standard
medal at the distance.
