COMMITTEE MEETING - 26th MAY
q It was made known the Club has been allocated a third ECCA

2007 and 2008.
q Colin has received Police confirmation for the Wolsey ICA 10s

CTC SUFFOLK 50 MILE STANDARD RIDE - 19TH APRIL
A variation of previous courses was used ,as it had been decided
to donate the entry fees to Suffolk Punch Trust at Hollesley.
The course therefore did a clockwise circuit from Ipswich with
a control at the Trust's home before finishing at Woodbridge
on a bright sunny day but with a cool nagging north east wind.
Among the 43 riders who supported the cause were Club members
Paul Broom, Colin Kindred, Ken and Maureen Nichols, Mick Pepper
and our new member John Williamson together with Tom Walker.
MEMBER'S NEWS
q Paul Martin will be glad to get back to cycling after taking
a break this year to run his first marathon in London on 26th
April. Paul's knees gave out at 8 miles but he continued to finish
in 5 hours 1 minute minus a toenail.
q Colin Kindred took part in the CTC touring weekend in Lincolnshire
at the end of April but rode 150 miles to and from the venue
to make a 450 mile week.
q On May 4th Colin Clarke and Mick Pepper joined about 70 others
and rode the ECCA 107 km (67 miles) Open Randonee on a very cool
day with a stiff north west wind and occasional light rain. Starting
at High Easter with controls at Coggeshall and Castle Hedingham
the anti-clockwise circuit saved the hilly bits until later.
q John Parkes made a start to his road racing for the year when
he finished safely in the bunch at the Dunton Circuit on 21st
May.
q May 23rd saw Colin K and Mick among the 58 entrants riding
the CC Sudbury "Four Fords" 104 km (64 mile) Audax
starting from Long Melford. A beautiful sunny morning saw riders
head north east to Buxhall for the 1st control before turning
south to the control at Hadleigh but not before climbing one
of the two steepest hills in the county, followed by the Semer
hill climb course. After Hadleigh it was the challenging route
to Stoke by Nayland, Bures and Lamarsh to finish at Long Melford.
Perhaps putting the final touches to his training for a forthcoming
"E to E", Colin rode to and from the event to make
a 108 mile day.
q On May 30th some members attended a surprise 60th birthday
party for ex member Roger Pooley. During the 1960's Roger was
a member of a team with Mick and John T who were unbeatable in
the region, at one time winning nine consecutive team awards
in Open Time Trials.
RACING NEWS
Members have competed in 20 TTs as well as bunched racing since
the last newsletter and have come away with five awards in the
Time Trials. This shows that although we may be a small club
we are certainly active.
STOWMARKET & DCC 20 (BS33) - 18TH APRIL
It was a sunny afternoon but with a cool northeast wind which
was the wrong way for the Debenham circuit providing a hard ride
from Pettaugh to Occold. Barry Lee showed his liking for sporting
courses with 57.55 but was pushed by Roger Selmes recording 59.07.
Supporting them were Colin Clarke 1.5.24 and Olive Forsbrook
1.30.14. Ted Saunderson also rode and did 59.26 which won him
the 70+ age award.
EAST ANGLIAN CC 25 (B25/4) - 19TH APRIL
The cool hard northeast wind was even more noticeable next morning
with the early start on the A11 from Besthorpe and providing
a headwind finish. Bob Quarton did a very solid 1.2.44 accompanied
by John Coles 1.7.46 and Roger, just hours after his ride at
Debenham, 1.12.20.
KINGS LYNN CC 10 (B10/37R) - 25TH APRIL
It was a breezy afternoon with a headwind start on the triangular
course from Tottenhill where with a pause to ease her cramp our
only entrant Olive completed in 41.22.
VTTA (East Anglian Group) 10 (B10/38) - 26TH APRIL
A sunny seemingly still morning had riders complaining of a very
cold early start and a hard ride to the turn but saw our three
riders all improve on their times in the same event last year
on the A14 between Rougham and Woolpit.. John C was our fastest
with 24.41 backed by Ken Nichols whose 28.41 was his fastest
since his comeback, gained him 2nd handicap in the event and
his VTTA standard medal. Maureen found the conditions not so
much to her liking recording 31.25 while Ted rode and did 28.05.
It was noted that the same number of Club members helped in running
the event as rode it.
CAMBRIDGE CC 10 (F2D/10) - 2ND MAY
John C explored new roads when he travelled to Cambridgeshire
to try a relatively new dual carriageway course between St Neots
and Cambridge. On a warm sunny afternoon with a moderate breeze
he felt his trip was worth it as he recorded 25.17 for his best
of the year.
CC BRECKLAND 25 (BS35) - 2ND MAY
Ken and Maureen rode the sporting 2 lap circuit at Scoulton which
incorporated the EDCA Circuit Championship on a warm sunny afternoon
of light wind. Ken carried on from where he left off last week
by recording 1.17.08 which was the fastest since his comeback
and gained him his Vets standard medal with a plus of 5.59. Maureen's
1.21.16 took nearly 10 minutes off her time in the event last
year, while Ted recorded 1.12.34.
VC BARACCHI 10 (B10/43A) - 4TH MAY
A brisk west wind and a temperature of 6 degrees made it a very
testing ride back from the Bungay turn on the Waveney Valley
course but it produced a tight competition for the top Club spot
with four riders covered by 15 seconds. John Tovell gained top
spot by four seconds with 26.39 from Mark Pearce 26.43, John
C 26.47 and John Parkes just back from a 700 mile fortnight
in Majorca was 1 second off his PB with 26.54. Roger feeling
the difference between a week of Lanzarote sun and a cold early
morning in Norfolk recorded 29.10 while Ted did 27.31.
GODRIC CC 10 (B10/43A) - 9TH MAY
It was a warm sunny afternoon with a stiff wind that made a very
hard but shorter return on the Wortwell to Bungay course. After
a near miss last week it was Mark's turn to claim top Club spot
when his 25.33 beat John T's 26.00. Ged Coles making his debut
of the season recorded 27.31 followed by Ken and Maureen who
returned 29.20 and 31.30 respectively. Ted riding for the IBC
did 27.29.
SHAFTESBURY CC 10 (E210) - 9TH MAY
It was the same stiff wind as on the Bungay course but at Six
Mile Bottom, provided a headwind start on the A11. Jim Stow was
having his first ride of the season which lasted for 25.46 while
John C returned 26.01.
WISBECH WHEELERS CC 25 (B25/6) - 10TH MAY
A bright sunny morning initially with little wind but which rose
steadily during the event produced quite a good morning on the
two lap course using the Wisbech Bypass. Riding one second quicker
than he did in the same event last year Bob did 1.1.59 to record
his fastest of the year.
MALDON & DCC 25 (E21/25A) - 10TH MAY
Starting his quest for SPOCO SE points Colin C travelled to
Essex where he covered two laps of the Steeple -Bradwell circuit
in 1.21.10, experiencing similar conditions to those at Wisbech.
LEA VALLEY CC 10 (E2/10) - 16TH MAY
It was a much harder ride to the turn than last week which was
shown by slower times by most of the riders. That is except John
C who improved with 25.45.
STOWMARKET & DCC 10 (B10/33) - 16TH MAY
The weather map showed a 35 mph southwest wind which provided
a very hard return trip on the Woolpit - Ixworth road. Wolsey
riders monopolised the Vets prize list with John T recording
26.57 to take 1st Vet on std award backed by John P 28.04, Ged
28.43 for 3rd Vet on std and Colin C 32.16.
IPSWICH BC 10 (B10/9) - 23RD MAY
A fine sunny afternoon with the usual breeze from the sea produced
reasonable conditions on the course through Tunstall Forest.
Mark was our fastest rider with 26.19 followed by John P 27.26
and Colin C 30.57.
IPSWICH BC 25 (B25/2) - 24TH MAY
It was even better conditions the next morning at the same venue
with a warm day and very light wind on the two lap Tunstall -Butley-
Wantisden course. Mark continued from where he left off on Saturday
by leading us with a very commendable 1.7.09 which won him 3rd
handicap award in the event. Backing Mark were Ken 1.18.05, Colin
C 1.21.48 and Maureen 1.24.49.
VTTA (East Anglian Group) 25 (E2/25) - 24th MAY
What appeared to be near perfect conditions on the A14/A11 course
from Newmarket was not endorsed by riders after they had finished
the harder second half. Bob continued his improvement with each
ride to record 1.00.31 for the latest FotY time. Barry followed
with 1.6.55 after two weeks off his bike with asthma and Roger
did 1.9.59. Ted was riding for 1.7.10.
CC BRECKLAND 10 (B10/3) - 27TH MAY
The short series of evening events on the A11 course from Besthorpe
started with a very strong blustery southwest wind that dropped
somewhat in the cool evening. Our riders who all had success
in various forms, were led by John C with a new FotY 24.34 closely
followed by John T getting back to his old form with 24.45 which
won him the fastest 70+ age group award. John P, having lost
nearly two stone since Christmas, improved his PB by 1-05 to
25.48 while Colin C did his fastest of the year with 28.27.
VTTA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 10 (F2D/10) - 30TH MAY
A warm sunny but breezy afternoon provided a hard start from
Cambourne on the west to east course on the A 428 west of Cambridge.
John T regained top Club spot for the day with 24.44 edging three
seconds ahead of John C's 24.47. Ken and Maureen both recorded
best times since their comeback with 28.21 and 30.17 respectively
which gained them both a VTTA standard medal for the distance,
while Maureen's was a FotY.
LEA VALLEY CC 50 (E2/50C) - 30TH MAY
Bob had the same breezy conditions on the A11/A14 course east
of Cambridge but here the wind was much more on the side than
at Cambourne and he recorded a very pleasing 2.3.56.
EAST DISTRICT CA CHAMPIONSHIP 10 (B10/3) -31ST MAY
A warm breezy morning at Besthorpe gave a headwind to the turn
but produced some good times. John C having warmed up in the
Vets 10 the previous afternoon nailed the FotY line with 24.11
and was supported by Jim Stow 25.27 and Roger 26.26. Ted also
rode and did 26.23.
