The Wolsey run ICA 10's start at Henley on 7th July
and Colin (01473 463009) would be glad to have your offers of
help to run these.
OPEN 25 16TH MAY
For his 14th promotion for the Club, Mark had a fine sunny morning
at Wortwell with a clear blue sky and light breeze which did
rise making a hard last leg back from Bungay.
The entry of 56 was five up on last year but it was more pleasing
to see six ladies entered compared with three in 2009. Three
course records were broken on the day, men, women and trike with
James Eman (Anglian Velo) winning with 56.05. Emilie Fisher (Orbea)
was the fastest lady for the third time with an excellent 1.1.42
and was presented with the Pat Pepper Memorial Trophy by Mick
after the event. Thanks to Mark again for a well organised event
and to all the helpers on the day, without whom the event would
not have happened.
COMMITTEE MEETING - 3RD MAY
q A Festival of Cycling will take place at Ipswich Cornhill on
9th May.
q We were unsure of the benefit to the Club of renewing membership
to Ipswich Voluntary Community Services as far as booking the
Tower Street room was concerned. Maureen will make enquiries.
q Bob reported on the Club's ECCA marshalling duty which was
completed satisfactorily. There was confusion for some riders
because race numbers were available at the start instead of the
HQ because of the closed level crossing gates.
q The Club's marshalling commitments for the EDCA 100 on 11th
July were noted.
q Colin K requested help for the ICA 10's at Henley commencing
July 7th.
q Maureen will make enquiries of the small number of members
who have not yet rejoined.
q Mark went through the final arrangements for the Open 25.
q Date of the next meeting 24th June.
MEMBER'S NEWS
q It was good to see members riding the Headway Charity
Ride between Bury St Edmunds and Kesgrave on 17th April. A Club
trio of Alistair Farquharson, Paul Martin and Andy Pearson, who
had received treatment at the clinic, rode to Bury before joining
the ride back to Kesgrave on a fine warm day.
q Due to the Icelandic volcanic dust cloud John Parkes and Roger
Selmes lost four days of their two week Majorca training camp
in mid April. However after an initial 24 hours of rain when
they arrived they made good use of the remaining days to rack
up 470 miles.
q Colin Kindred did not need to go to Majorca to record a 470
mile week. He achieved this by riding two days each way to join
the CTC four day tour in the Lincolnshire Wolds at the end of
April, perhaps in preparation for his next tour.
q On 9th May Alistair rode the 100 mile Action Medical Research
" Suffolk Sunrise" ride from Woodbridge on a cold damp
morning. A few hours after riding a PB 25 Andy Pearson joined
him for the 100 km route.
RACING NEWS
The season is now well under way with members riding in ten events
since the last report and collecting two awards.
EAST ANGLIAN CC 25 - (B25/4) - 18TH APRIL
A very cold start which gradually warmed up but with that benefit
the north east wind rose to give a hard last seven miles. Jim
Stow led us, on his debut ride of the season, when he rode his
106 inch fixed for 1.5.38 followed by John Coles 1.6.13. Ken
Nichols enjoyed his first ride on the course recording 1.12.52
which gained him his Vet Std medal and was his fastest since
1988, while Maureen backed him up with 1.22.14.
VTTA (EAST ANGLIAN GROUP) 10 - (B10/38) - 25TH APRIL
A dull, still morning produced an even but sticky ride on the
A14 between Rougham and Woolpit. Ken produced 27.59 which, for
the 2nd weekend in succession was the fastest since his comeback
and gained his Vet Std medal at the distance, while Maureen just
missed her standard with 30.45. 2nd claim member Ted Saunderson
returned 27.16 and there were more Club members helping with
the event than rode it.
CAMBRIDGE CC 10 - (F2D/10) - 1ST MAY
The Bank Holiday weekend started with a warm afternoon and light
side wind on the A428 between Cambourne and Hardwick, west of
Cambridge, which made John C's trip worthwhile when he recorded
24.51.
VC BARACCHI 10 - (B10/43) - 3RD MAY
Monday morning was completely different along the Waveney valley
between Wortwell and Bungay with a cold and blustery wind facing
the riders on the longer outward leg with the return trip not
as fast as expected. John Parkes led a trio of riders out of
the six who entered, with a very good 25.59 followed by Mark
Pearce making his debut for the season, 27.45 and Roger Selmes
30.45. Ted also rode and recorded 29.32.
EASTERN COUNTIES CA 10 - (E91/10) - 3RD MAY
By the time the afternoon event was run on the Leaden Roding
- Dunmow road the wind had risen considerably providing a dead
headwind on the longer outward leg. Colin Clarke, also in his
first ride of the year, recorded 33.16.
GODRIC CC 10 - (B10/43) - 8TH MAY
The non-summer like weather continued with a very wet, cold and
windy afternoon ride between Wortwell and Bungay with riders
again facing the headwind on the longer outward leg. John Tovell
with 27.14 opened his bank account for the year with 2nd Vet
on Std in the 70+ age group while Ken followed with 29.33 and
Maureen 32.13. Ted was also there for 28.52.
SHAFTESBURY CC - MM 25 - (E2/25) - 8TH MAY
Similar condition prevailed at the same time on the A14/A11 course
from Newmarket with the added feature of spray from the road.
Of our five entrants, Andy Pearson was the only who elected to
ride and was rewarded with an excellent 1.00.43 which was a PB
by three seconds. His ride was even more noteworthy because at
the start he noticed a saddle rail was broken, which meant he
spent a lot of time out of the saddle hoping it would last an
hour. That was after being delayed on the way to the event and
arriving with only just time to ride to the start.
WISBECH WHEELERS CC 25 - (B25/6) - 9TH MAY
It may not have been wet on the two lap course around the Wisbech
bypass but the cold and rising north east wind persisted making
the second half of each lap hard work and on the day John C 's
1.7.42 was a respectable effort.
STOWMARKET & DCC 10 - (B10/33) - 15TH MAY
The weather has at last improved, although the wind was from
the north west giving a headwind to the turn on the Woolpit to
Ixworth road, it was warmer. John T led our trio with 27.12,
followed by an improving duo of Roger 28.37 and Colin C 31.56.
WOLSEY RC 25 -(B25/50) - 16TH MAY
On a fine, sunny but cool morning with the rising west wind giving
a hard finish on the two lap Wortwell to Bungay course, Maureen
recorded her fastest of the year with 1.20.39 to gain the 4th
fastest lady award.
