WOLSEY 50TH ANNIVERSARY CLUB RIDE 12th
JUNE
It was encouraging for the organisers Ken and Maureen to see 35
past and present members, some having travelled from Scotland
and Devon to attend, involved in the ride starting at Barham picnic
area on a dull and breezy day. Colin K had planned a route to
Ashfield where a lavish elevenses was followed by a photo shoot
before the 50km ride returned to Barham Sorrel Horse, which was
the racing HQ for local events when the Wolsey was formed.

COMMITTEE MEETING 20TH JUNE
- Apologies John P
- New members- Gordon Brown - proposed Mick, seconded Colin K
- The open 25 was reviewed and all signs are that it was a very
successful event, which also made a profit. It was discussed that
certain measures might be taken to try and boost entries next
year with emphasis on ladies.
- It was noted the "B" symbol for the event had been
omitted from the National Handbook entry.
- Mark would be willing to organise the event in 2012 on the corresponding
date to this year. It was decided to offer free entry to juniors
next year.
- The organisation of the Wolsey ICA events was discussed and
the available help assessed.
- No offers to marshal at the EDCA 100 had been received, Ken
and Maureen agreed to do this.
- Karen had received photos of the anniversary ride for the website.
- Date of next meeting 8th August.
MEMBERS' NEWS
- On 14th May John Williamson on his tandem with wife Jane, rode
the 104 km CC Sudbury "Four Fords" Audax from Long Melford.
On a very breezy day they completed the course without mishap
but managed to do an extra 10 miles off course in the process.
- Karen Eaton travelled to South Wales to ride the famous or infamous
"Dragon Ride" on 5th June with approximately 4,000 other
riders. After queuing for 45 minutes to get into the event car
park, followed by a lengthy queue for the four available toilets
and over an hour wait at the start it was then not feasible to
reach the cut off point for the 200km event before it closed.
Karen therefore was resigned to riding the 75-mile version, which
still featured 1700 metres of climbing. This she rode solo and
after encountering a heavy hail and rainstorm achieved the silver
standard for her category.
- On 2nd July Mick Pepper joined 88 others at Bildeston to ride
a CC Sudbury Audax with a choice of 104 or 161 kms. Mick and 30
others rode the 161 km (100 mile) version, which was basically
to Orford via Debenham, Framlingham and Snape and a return via
Wickham Market with a decidedly bumpy final 25 miles.
- 10th July saw John Williamson, again accompanied by his tandem
and wife Jane, in an entry of 60 plus riding the Diss CTC 107km
"Lesser Garboldisham Grovel" Audax. On a super day of
riding the course took riders east on a clockwise loop via Harleston
and Wetheringsett.
RACING NEWS
This must be the busiest month of the year with members riding
in 19 open time trials, winning seven awards, breaking three club
records, recording several PBs and amassing eight new FotY rides.
This was backed by members competing in evening Club events and
riding Audax/Sportive events
VTTA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 30 - (H30/4)
- 29TH MAY
It was a hard day on a course run on three 10-mile loops from
Great Missenden, Herts organised by the London and Home Counties
Group. The main prize list in Championship events is on standard
in which Ged Coles's 1.21.37 was 6th with a plus of 21.09. Although
missing the awards, Ged had the consolation of breaking the late
John Tovell's six-year-old Vet on Std Club record by 1.28.
EAST DISTRICT CA CHAMPIONSHIP 10 - (B10/3)
- 30TH MAY (Mon)
A morning event on the A11 course from Besthorpe brought a brisk
southeast breeze from which riders were shielded on the return
by embankments and the lie of the course. John Parkes continued
where he left off the week before as our leader by recording 23.40,
followed by John Coles whose 24.22 was nearly a minute quicker
than the previous week, a better day on the same course. Karen
Eaton produced a sparkling 25.28, which was a PB by 2.09, gained
her third handicap award in the event and won her a gold Club
time standard, a rare feat for lady riders. Two weeks off the
bike did Roger Selmes no harm as he recorded 27.46 while Colin
Clarke did 28.26 and Maureen Nichols 31.18.
EASTERN COUNTIES CA 10 CHAMPIONSHIP - (E2/10)
- 4TH JUNE
A strong northeast wind made for a 30 mph trip to the turn at
Four Went Ways on the A11 but a different story on the return.
Despite this John P recorded his fastest on the course with 23.51
backed by Ged 24.49, John C 26.00 and Bob Quarton 27.28.
ECCA 25 CHAMPIONSHIP -(E2/25) -5TH JUNE
The morning after the previous afternoon's event saw the same
wind providing a hard second half although this was broken by
embankments for the last five miles around Newmarket. Ged led
a Club trio with a solid 1.4.35 followed by Roger 1.12.45 and
Colin C whose 1.14.21 was a three-year best.
CC BRECKLAND - EAST DISTRICT CA CIRCUIT
CHAMPIONSHIP 25 -(BS35) - 8TH JUNE
A breezy evening that threatened rain throughout was the fare
for two laps of the draggy Scoulton circuit. Karen produced another
PB this time by 10 secs in recording 1.12.32 which won the fastest
lady award in the open event and the gold medal for the ladies
circuit champion. Colin C in the hunt for SPOCO(East) points recorded
1.19 05.
VTTA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 25 -(E2/25) -11TH
JUNE
Another windy afternoon on the A14/A11 course from Newmarket with
a mainly headwind to the turn nevertheless produced good times
with 79 riders beating the hour. John P showed utmost consistency
when getting under the hour for the 2nd time and exactly matching
his earlier PB with 59.43. Bob backed him up with 1.00.38 with
Jim Stow recording 1.2.33 on his 106" fixed.
ESSEX ROADS CC 10.3 -(E18/6B) -15TH JUNE
Colin C travelled to Mid Essex in search of SPOCO (South east)
points and rode two laps of the undulating East Hanningfield circuit.
The evening was breezy with drizzle in which Colin recorded 32.29.
EAST ANGLIAN CC 10 - (B10/3) - 16TH JUNE
Wet roads from earlier rain had dried out before the start on
the A11 at Besthorpe resulting in a rising wind for the return
trip. John P led us again with 23.36 for 3rd Vet on Std award
in the 60-69 age group and for a new FotY by one second. Jim recorded
25.19, John C 26.14, Karen 26.36 and Roger 27.05 for his fastest
ride of the year.
SHAFTESBURY CC MIDDLEMARKERS 25 -(E2/25)
- 18TH JUNE
A breezy afternoon with a headwind to the turn and a very heavy
rain shower in the mid section of each half saw Bob record a very
creditable 59.27 for his fastest ride of the year.
PLOMESGATE CC 25 -(B25/2R) -18TH JUNE
Very similar conditions were experienced on the two lap Tunstall/Rendlesham/Butley
circuit with the added hazards of sharp corners and gritty roads
which produced very varied fortunes for our riders. Ged returned
1.10.10, which won him 2nd Vet on Std award with a plus of 15.28
followed by Roger 1.16.21. Trevor Roberts riding his first 25
had the misfortune to puncture and lost several minutes before
returning 1.25.11, while Andy Pearson punctured twice and DNF.
John P meanwhile crashed halfway round the second circuit and
suffered multiple bruises and grazes together with a broken collarbone,
which saw him, spend the rest of the day in Ipswich Hospital.
Get well soon, John you were going so well.
GODRIC CC (EDCA CHAMPIONSHIP) 50 - (B50/18)
- 26TH JUNE
The first local 50 of the season was granted a warm morning with
a slight but rising south wind over the two and half lap course
on the A11 from Besthorpe. Of the six Wolsey names on the start
sheet we managed two finishers with Andy recording 2.11.04 and
Karen in her first attempt at the distance an excellent 2.15.19
to achieve a 2nd Club gold time standard.
CHELMER CC 25 - (E9/25) -26TH JUNE
Travelling to Essex in search of SPOCOI (South east) points, Colin
C found mild conditions and a light wind on the single carriageway
dogleg course between Chelmsford and Dunmow where he recorded
1.18.11.
CC BRECKLAND 10 -(B10/3) -29TH JUNE
Due to an administrative mix up regarding the entry closing date
John C was our only participant on a mild evening at Besthorpe
where with a slight side wind he recorded 25.18.
NORWICH ABC 10 -(B10/43) - 2ND JULY
A warm afternoon at Wortwell with a slight breeze gave a slightly
harder trip to the turn at Bungay. Ged headed our duo with 25.08,
which won him 2nd Vet on Std award while Roger recorded 27.58.
2nd claim member Ted Saunderson returned 28.24.
WHITEWEBBS CC 10 -(F20/10) -2ND JULY
John C travelled to Amhill in Hertfordshire to ride the course
on the A10, which features a sizeable climb and descent in each
half. Warm conditions with a light side wind saw John record 24.30
to be near his season's best.
NORWICH ABC 25 - (B25/4) - 3RD JULY
One of the best mornings of the year greeted riders at Besthorpe
for the event on the A11 course. Andy recorded a sub hour ride
with 59.46 closely followed by Bob's 1.00.11. Jim recorded a season's
best 1.2.03 exactly one minute ahead of Ged whose 1.3.03 secured
1st Vet on Std award by over two minutes. Our ride of the day
must belong to Trevor who after his eventful initiation into 25s
in the recent Plomesgate event improved by almost 18 minutes to
1.7.19.
EAST LONDON VELO 10 -(E2/10/) -9TH JULY
It was another trip to the A11 course south of Newmarket for our
riders where a strong southwest wind made it a very hard trip
to the turn. Ged led a trio with 25.12 backed by Jim 25.15 and
John C 25.47.
NEWMARKET CYCLING & TRI CLUB 21 -( BS36)
-10TH JULY
It was a super morning for racing, but riders could say it was
a pity about the course as the event was on the hilly Ashley circuit
taking in Newmarket and Stradishall. Both in search SPOCO (East)
points Ged did a very sound 59.00 while Roger's 1.5.09 was nearly
a minute quicker than last year.
CC BRECKLAND (EDCA CHAMPIONSHIP 15) - (B15/1/)
- 13TH JULY
A very dull inhospitable evening with a cold blustery north wind
blowing across the A11 from Besthopre greeted a mixed Club team
riding the seldom raced distance. Bob recorded 37.13 followed
by Jim 38.59 and Karen 40.36, which is a new ladies and lady vet
Club record, beating Maureen's 2009 figure by 3.16.
IPSWICH CYCLE RACING SERIES - TRINITY PARK
The six event series started on 8th June and by the third event
on 22nd June Karen decided she would try bunched racing and rode
the 35-minute "Go Race" event. The next week Andy joined
her to ride the same event.
