Now that summer has arrived many cyclists leave the country and Wolsey members are no exception.

Ken & Maureen Nichols were part of the CTC tour which rode down the Danube for two weeks after which K & M carried on for another week to Budapest.

Colin Kindred has ridden in the French Alps for two weeks, while Colin Dales stayed nearer to home and rode the annual ‘Tour of Troy Vallees’, otherwise known as the ‘Dieppe Raid’ Randonee ride.

ESSEX CASTLE BIKE RIDE  -  11TH JUNE

Keigh Kingsbury’s injured finger had not healed sufficiently to allow him to accompany his daughter Lesley Sathuphap on the Bike Events organised ride from Colchester.

Nevertheless, Lesley had no problems with the sporting, picturesque 75ml route taking in the Stour Valley, Castle Hedingham and Finchingfield on a fine but breezy day and completing in about 5 1/2 hours. My apology for a previous spelling mistake with Lesley’s surname  -  I blame Olive’s writing!

NORWICH  100/50  -  12TH JUNE

The second event of the weekend organised by Bike Events, saw Ken Pegram ride the 100ml version on a revised course covering east Norfolk, which incorporated a crossing on Reedham Ferry with the inevitable queues. Despite some stiff head wind sections, heavy rain showers and a rear wheel puncture, Ken finished muddy but satisfied.

CTC SUFFOLK DA AUDAX RIDES  -  19TH JUNE

Held on the day when the hottest June temperature in Suffolk for nearly 50 years was recorded at 33c in Newmarket, the three events of 604, 210 and 110kms provided a tough day for some 90 riders from Lawford.

Mick Pepper elected for the 210km (131mls) Eastern Rambler event with controls at Castle Hedingham-Saffron Walden-Red Lodge and Lavenham. As well as a 50ml head wind back from Red Lodge the event included 1610 metres of vertical ascent and qualified for a point in the Audax Altitude Competition.

Colin Clarke rode the 110km (69ml) Eastern Rover, but to supplement his mileage rode out and back to the event from Ipswich. This event was equally testing and, although it did not go to Red Lodge, it contained 880 metres of vertical climbing. Who tells us Suffolk is flat?

MOUTAIN MAYHEM  -  26/27TH JUNE

Tom Walker made a switch to fat tyres when he rode the Mountain Mayhem 24 hour mountain bike event at Eastnor Castle in the Malvern Hills of Herefordshire which attracted over 2000 competitors. Tom rode  as a member of one of over 400 teams who rode the race as a relay in the glutinous muddy conditions

and survived with just scratches and bruises after his heavy crash in last year’s event.

RACING NEWS

EAST DISTRICT CA  CHAMPIONSHIP  ‘10’  (B10/3)  -  5TH JUNE

After three successive local events were cancelled because of weather, it was at least dry for the event from Besthorpe but a brisk wind hampered progress on the return trip.

Two championship medals came the Club’s way when John Tovell secured 3rd Vet on Std. award with his 24.57 while Mark Pearce got third handicap with 25.37. Making up the numbers were Jim Stow 25.29, John Coles 26.50, Mick Pepper 28.04, Colin Clarke 28.31, Pat Pepper 30.47 (new Club Fastest of the Year) and Olive Forsbrook 35.01.

MALDON & DIST. CC  ‘50’  (E21/50)  -  5TH JUNE

Tom Walker went in search of SPOCO points when he rode the event on rural roads in the Bradwell area in Essex and recorded 2.22.32 for a new Club ‘Fastest of the Year’ at the distance.

GODRIC CC  ‘10’  (B10/44)  -  11TH JUNE

A cool northerly breeze gave a  mainly side wind along the Waveney Valley on a bright afternoon. Mark Pearce led a Club team home with 25.46 accompanied by John C. 26.31 and John Anniss, returning a creditable 27.10 in his first race after his recent crash. Ted Saunderson (IBC) also rode with 26.59.

EASTERN COUNTIES CA  ‘10‘  (E2/10)  -  11TH JUNE

EVENT CANCELLED  -  road works.

G0DRIC CC  ‘25’  (B25/24C)  -  12TH JUNE

The wind shifted to a more westerly direction next morning on the same road but brought with it a very cold morning for the 8.00am start. After a break from competing for a few weeks Bob Quarton just retained his place as team leader when he recorded 1.4.04 to John T’s 1.4.07, which gained him 3rd Vet on Std. award. Barry Lee did 1.8.34, Mick Pepper 1.9.58, Pat Pepper 1.20.37 and Olive 1.30.12. Ted had his second ride of the weekend returning 1.7.56.

HERTS WHEELERS  ‘30’  (E2/30)  -  12TH JUNE

EVENT CANCELLED.  Incorporating the East Anglian Vet’s Championship the event was moved from the E2 because of road works to the nearby E1 which then acquired road works and traffic lights.

EAST ANGLIAN CC  ’10’  (B10/3)  -  16TH JUNE

It was at least a worm evening which seemed to soften the hard head wind return on the A11 at Besthorpe and helped to produce some good times. Leading the Club team was Jim who pushed a 100” fixed for 24.22 closely followed by John T. on 24.26. John C. cleared another hurdle when he recorded 25.46 for a PB by 42 secs.

PLOMESGATE CC  ’10’  (B10/9)  -  18TH JUNE

A very warm afternoon with the usual wind off the sea saw the first holder of a Club trophy decided this season when Pat retained the ‘Nichols’ ladies 10ml trophy with 33.31 to Olive’s 35.47. Making up the cast were Bob 26.15, John C. 28.07 and John A. 28.28.  Ted recorded 28.07 to tie with John C.

GT. YARMOUTH CC  (B10/44)  -  19TH JUNE

It is unusual to have a Sunday morning ‘10’ to ride in the District but it was worth it for Olive, the Club’s sole representative, when on a warm morning along the Waveney Valley she recorded 33.27 to secure the 2nd ladies handicap award. Ted also rode both days at the weekend returning 26.43.

CC BRECKLAND  ‘10’  (B10/3)  -  21ST JUNE

A warm but sticky evening with a lightish wind produced the best evening so far on the A11 at Besthorpe with a corresponding crop of good times. In the contest of the Club Johns, John T. came out top with a new ‘Fastest of the Year’ 23.43, while John C., continuing his progress with another PB, knocked exactly a minute off his last week’s mark with 24.46. John A. was close behind with 25.06.

It was pay back time for Mick when he recorded 27.11, just 48 hours after his boiling Audax ride, but Pat more than compensated with a 29.28 which knocked one and quarter mins off her ‘Fastest of the Year’ mark and won her the Fastest Lady award.

IPSWICH BC  ‘10’  (B10/9)  -  25TH JUNE

A stiff N.E. wind blowing off the sea as usual did not make it an easy afternoon in and out of Tunstall Forest from Sudbourne. Bob led a minimum Club team with 25.48 backed by Colin C. 30.35 and Olive 35.52.

Sally Marsh, riding her first open event, had the misfortune to experience a mechanical problem and DNF.

SHAFTESBURY CC  ‘25’  (E2/25)  -  25TH JUNE

After a string of cancelled events on the A11 in Essex, the oversubscribed middle-markers event got the programme moving again on a breezy and surprising cool evening, with a very fast trip to the turn. Barry led a Club team with a very solid 1.5.03 followed by John A. 1.6.52, John T’s evening spelt disappointment however, when he punctured during his warm up and reported 4 mins late to the time-keeper to record 1.10.11. Ted was on excellent form returning 1.2.57.

IPSWICH BC  ’25’  (B25/2)  -  26TH JUNE

The second half of the I.B.C. racing weekend gave the opportunity to race over 2 laps of the sporting Wantisden-Tunstall-Bromswell circuit, with less wind than Saturday but also many fewer degrees on a cool morning. Bob was again our leader with 1.5.41 followed at a distance by Mick 1.13.42, Colin C. 1.19.08, Pat 1.23.07 and Olive 1.32.11.

COLCHESTER ROVERS CC  ‘10‘  (E7/10D)  -  28TH JUNE

A Club team journeyed to the evening event on the A120 from Ardleigh which featured a warm, mainly side wind. Jim pushed his large fixed gear for 24.17 followed by John A. 25.17 and John C. 26.20.

Ted recorded 25.42.

NORWICH ABC  ‘10’  (B10/44)  -  2ND JULY

A stiff head wind to the turn did not produce the hoped for fast finish at Bungay in this afternoon event. Mark led our Club duo with 25.18 and John T. doing 25.44. Ted did a 25.48 for a possible Vets award.

VTTA (EAST ANGLIAN GROUP)  ‘10’  (E2/10)  -  2ND JULY

Just two of the Club Johns rode on the A11 on a warm, breezy evening with a hard push to the turn. They both produced good rides with John A. doing 25.01 and John C. 25.09.

EASTERN COUNTIES CA  ‘100’ (E2/100)  -  3RD JULY

A morning that dawned seemingly ideal for racing saw the light south wind strengthen to produce a testing final 30 miles on the exposed A11 in Cambridgeshire where Mick produced a 5.06.14 ride.

DISS & DIST. CC  ‘25’  (B25/17)  -  3RD JULY

A reasonable morning for the event on the undulating Diss-Thetford road gave an easier ride back to the finish at Bressingham. Tom Walker, strengthened by his 24hr MTB event, recorded a 1.7.19  PB accompanied by Barry 1.8.08 who was making his debut on the course. Colin C. recorded 1.18.48 and Olive 1.33.02.

VTTA (EAST ANGLIAN GROUP)  ‘10’  (B10/3)  -  5TH JULY

EVENT CANCELLED  -  rain on course.
